An introduction to teaching Games Development for secondary school teachers or educators in informal settings who teach this topic to learners of ages 11 to 24.

This is a two-day course 

The first day (Wednesday 2nd October) will be delivered by BAFTA and will include practical activities on how to design games as well as a meet the Industry session.

  • Learn tips and tricks on how to get your class involved in Game Concept and Game Making. Resources are aimed at encouraging 10-18 years old to enter the Young Games Designer competition and will provide them with all the information they’ll need on the game design process.
  • Discover new ideas on how you could incorporate these plans into PSHE, Business Studies, Computing, English, Art and other subject lessons.
  • There will also be presentations from leading games development companies on careers and the games industry.

The second day (Friday 4th October) will be delivered by Digital Schoolhouse and will cover implementing designs in Construct 3, a game making software, with a focus on meeting the needs of the iMedia qualification. Ideas of different pedagogies to teach programming will be included, such as code reading, PRIMM, and using design.

Prior experience of teaching programming is advised but is not essential.

With follow up sessions for a Case Study

To make professional development effective, teachers need to implement learning that they gain from training in school. Therefore, teachers are expected to undertake a follow-up case study in which they introduce games development as part of an afterschool club or as a sequence of lessons. Queen Mary University of London will be supporting this component of the CPD, and there will be follow-up online sessions to support this as well as a sharing session in the Spring or Summer term.

Free software

Any teacher who attends the course will be provided with a free personal Construct 3 licence by Scirra for 1 year and given access to 100 free licences for their school on condition that they share lesson plans for 3 to 6 lessons that use Construct 3.

An event in the BAFTA YGD 2020 Launch  Week at Alexandra Palace 

This two-day course is part of the official launch of the 2020 BAFTA Young Game Designers Competition which will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary with a weeklong programme of events at Alexandra Palace.

Outline of the two training days 

Day 1 Wednesday 2nd October

  • 11:00-12:30 – BAFTA Games design – concept workshop
  • 12:30-13:30 –  Lunch – please bring your own (but we are looking for sponsors)
  • 13:30-16:00 – Careers Talks/Roundtables with Industry areas
  • 16:00-18:00 – Networking Drinks for teachers and industry  (to be confirmed)

Day 2 Friday 4th October

Device Requirements: Please bring your own laptops with Google Chrome installed. Construct 3 runs in a browser, so no further downloads are required, but you can install the software as an app from the main menu on the website prior to the workshop if you prefer. Please, visit and click on Menu to install the app.

  • 11:00-12:30 – Digital Schoolhouse Introduction to Construct 3, classroom set-up and creation of a basic game 
  • 12:30-13:30 –  Lunch – please bring your own (but we are looking for sponsors)
  • 13:30-16:00 – Creation of a more advanced game with details of how this links to the iMedia course

This course is being provided by a number of different groups including BAFTA, Digital Schoolhouse, Queen Mary University of London and through several different programmes including TechPathways and the IoC.
